Funded Free Pre-School Places @ Gowanlea

At 3 years of age children move to the pre-school unit. Gowanlea Nursery currently works in partnership with Glasgow City Council to provide funded pre-school sessions to children up to 5 years. The staff develop programs of experience-based learning for children in line with the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence. The nursery has an enthusiastic and committed Curriculum Supervisor as well as the ongoing support of a very capable peripatetic teacher. In their pre- school years children are encouraged to learn through direct experience within an environment that is both caring and stimulating. The Curriculum for Excellence includes a wide variety of activities, fun learning opportunities and experiences as described in the Parent Handbook – this can be viewed or downloaded from our website.

We work closely with parents and family to promote links in learning between home and nursery. Parents are encouraged to make use of our ‘nursery to home’ sheets and activities to help establish links in the process of learning between home and nursery. Pre-school children are provided with opportunities for learning out-of-doors. The nursery arranges many structured outdoor experiences. An ongoing part of the ‘outdoor world’ is the nursery’s own garden allotment where children learn about plants and food growing. Parents and family members are always welcome to take part, with the children, in some of our gardening and growing activities.

Daily routines encourage independence. Children are helped to learn good table manners, to ‘take turns' and be polite to each other. We encourage and support children to value one another as individuals, to take pride in their achievements and to take an active interest in, and consideration for, the environment they share.
